Recently the Miami Dolphins football team has come under scrutiny for allowing player hazing and bullying. Somebody decided that they wanted to take their toys back and not play nice anymore in the sandbox. Allegedly, the Head Coach of the team had suggested that Richie Incognito toughen up rookie Jonathan Martin, this in turn led to the typical and ongoing 'hazing' and then bullying Martin.
Seems Incognito took it a step further in sending racial slurs through text messages to Martin. Locker room incidences occurred as did one event in the lunchroom when as Martin sat down to eat all the players got up and left. Was this a practical joke on Martin and the entire team was in on it and/or were some players aware of the bullying and intimidation tactics being used on Martin and just shrugged it off as harmless, typical rookie hazing?
Well, somebody got tired of playing in the sandbox and took his toys back! Now Incognito is left to play alone in the sandbox, meaning he is out of a job and his reputation you might say is tarnished. (He's been to anger management before.)
Now, this goes both ways, Incognito is labeled a bully, a possible racist, an intimidator. Martin could be labeled as a whinner, someone who couldn't take the hot sand in the sandbox and wanted his toys back.
But Martin is a man and could have said enough is enough and stood up to Incognito just as young children should do when they are bullied. I realize some are not that strong. But we are talking about 2 grown (BIG) men here are we not? The coaching staff was aware of the actions of Incognito and seem to have swept it under the rug, condoning the behavoir. Is this why it has come to the attention of the media/public? What is this teaching our youth? The Miami franchise is lucky that Martin didn't just snap and kill Incognito, himself or others.
Why is hazing necessary n the first place? Haven't we learned anything from previous hazing tragedies?
While I don't condone this type of behavoir, it seems to be the norm in the sports arena and something needs to change.
If you can take the heat get out of the sandbox.
